CURRENT SITUATION:
Safety standards exist for rental units, but not energy-efficiency standards.

WHAT THE POLICY WOULD CALL FOR:
Landlords will be responsible for ensuring that their properties meet minimum energy efficiency standards.
WHY THIS IS IMPORTANT:
Establishing a minimum standard for energy-efficiency in Tompkins County rental units would reduce the energy cost burden for residents.
Minimum Energy Efficiency Standards
Home Energy Rating and Disclosure
CURRENT SITUATION:
Landlords are not required to disclose historic amounts of utility bills to prospective tenants.

WHAT THE POLICY WOULD CALL FOR:
Landlords would make information about utility bills readily available for prospective tenants.
(For example, state the cost of heating bills in the monthly rent.)
WHY THIS IS IMPORTANT:
This policy is aimed at increasing tenant awareness and understanding of energy use in their homes. This will enable tenants to know the costs of
energy-use their homes before they sign a lease.
